I got Banned on Twitter

What happened?

Last Wednesday, a fresh sunny morning, I woke up at 7:30am, did the morning chores, went on a walk, meditated, read a few pages of a book, and finally…

Picked up my phone to scroll the bird app while sipping my morning tea, I came across a tweet saying “It’s official, I am shadowbanned on Twitter, perfect time to take a break, goodbye friends”, this intrigued me to check my account status on a shadowban tester.

Before this, I have never got shadowbanned or had any restrictions imposed on my Twitter account, but guess what, I was shocked to see the result.

I was shadowbanned.

I panicked, not being able to do anything, absolutely hating the feeling of something not being in my control.

I quickly messaged my friend(fellow tweeter) and he told me to calm down, as this is very normal.

In a state of panic, I started looking up Google and searching for solutions to this ban, as I never experienced any of this before, and took a decision.

I will wait for 1-2 more days, use Twitter naturally as I do, and if the ban persists, I need to take the tough path, a complete break from using it for 3-5 days.

The next day…

Same routine, same schedule, similar work, but this time, I did not scroll my phone, instead, opened my laptop → shadowban test → put in my username → check, and guess what?

It got removed.

Apparently, more than 80% of the Twitter profiles I follow, were shadowbanned this week, and everything went back to normal after a couple of days, but there is a keen insight/lesson hidden in this event, that I want to talk to you about.

Are you really the owner?

My fellow content creator, let’s have some real talk, are we really the leaders/owners of the audience we are building? If such shadow bans can take away our reach and engagement almost in an instant, what’s the use of doing all of this?

I understand you might have started creating content and building in public after I started talking about it, but in the end, realize this that nothing is in our control, only THIS conversation is in my control.

One of the things I have complete control over is this convo, why? Social media can’t take away my email list from me.

My Plans, and what can you do:

There are some things that will not COMPLETELY, but to a certain extent, keep your audience with you, here are some of my future plans regarding Twitter, feel free to take inspiration and craft your own:

1. Build my email list:

   As I said, I can talk to you whenever I want, social media doesn’t control this conversation, thus, building an email list can be one of your most valuable assets in 2023, there is no gatekeeping, start today, it is never too late.

2. My personal brand:

   This is a no-brainer, building an authentic personal brand is what can bulletproof you from these attacks. I will talk about this in more detail in the upcoming issues, but remember this for now.

3. Genuine connections:

   Social media and your audience might forget you, but the friends and relationships you made will not. If my account dies tomorrow, I have friends to contact and help me promote my new account, do you have such people? if not, this is the right time, to start networking.
